Progeny testing program (PTP) is a form of sib testing, by which we decide on the basis of animal’s offspring whether to continue for using a sire or dame to produce more offsprings. It is the only way to guaranty the desired genetic transmission in the progeny in terms of milk or beef. In breeding programs, all over the world emphasis is on maximum use of proven (tested) bulls.
The Institute has launched the world’s largest buffalo progeny testing program encompassing 3 Govt. Buffalo Farms (LES, Bhunikey, Haroonabad, & Chak Katora), 2 Military Buffalo Farms (Khayber & Punjnad) and in registered buffaloes of the farmers & breeders in 10 project districts; Kasur, Gujrat, Gujranwala, M. B. Din, Hafizabad, Faisalabad, T.T. Singh, Pakpattan, Vehari and Bahawalnagar.
The program involved following steps:
- Registration and Identification of buffaloes.
- Milk recording of registered buffaloes
- Selection of Bull Dams.
- Selection of Bull Sires.
- Production of Candidate Bull Calves.
- Purchase and Rearing of Bull Calves
- Selection of Candidate Bull Calves.
- Test mating of contesting bulls.
- Collection & preservation of semen.

In each Union Council, one Livestock Production Assistant is appointed for identification, registration & production recording. Furthermore, he performs A.I., deworming, vaccination and medication to the registered animals
One Livestock Production Officer is appointed for each district for monitoring the work of field staff and communicating the recorded data to the Breeding And Genetic Division
One Research Officer appointed in Area-I to compile, consolidate and verify the collected data in his project area. Likewise, Research Officer appointed in Area-II for similar functions
One Senior Research Officer is also appointed for over all supervision of PTP work in 10 districts, computer and molecular & genetics laboratories. He is working as head of division of Breeding and Genetics Division of BRI.
Each Livestock Production Assistant is provided a motorcycle on hire purchase basis on easy installment without interest. However, he is provided fixed TA @ Rs. 1500/- P.M. in lieu of POL and maintenance of motorcycle
The registered breeders are provided incentives in shape of free insemination, vaccination and medication of the registered animals and their progeny |
